Target Information
HSD11B1 is a microsomal enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of the stress hormone cortisol to the inactive metabolite cortisone. It can also catalyze the reverse reaction, converting cortisone back to cortisol. Excess cortisol can lead to central obesity, and variations in this gene have been linked to obesity and insulin resistance in children. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene.
