Target Information
The protein encoded by BAD is a member of the BCL-2 family, known regulators of programmed cell death. This protein promotes apoptosis by forming heterodimers with BCL-xL and BCL-2, counteracting their anti-apoptotic effects. The proapoptotic activity of BAD is regulated through phosphorylation. Protein kinases such as AKT and MAP kinase, as well as the phosphatase calcineurin, are involved in its regulation. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same isoform.
