Background
Integrin subunit alpha E (ITGAE) is a heterodimeric integral membrane protein composed of alpha and beta chains. The alpha integrin encoded by this gene contains an I-domain and undergoes post-translational cleavage in the extracellular domain, producing disulfide-linked heavy and light chains. Together with beta 7 integrin, it forms the E-cadherin binding integrin known as the human mucosal lymphocyte-1 antigen. ITGAE is preferentially expressed in human intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) and may play roles in adhesion and IEL activation. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
