Target Information
Megsin (also designated SerpinB7 and TP55) is a 380 amino acid cytoplasmic protein predominantly expressed in mesangial cells, which are important for maintaining glomerular structure and function. As a member of the serpin family, megsin acts as a serine protease inhibitor that can inactivate MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin—enzymes responsible for extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of megsin increases mesangial cell numbers and leads to mesangial matrix expansion accompanied by immune complex deposition, suggesting its involvement in renal structural regulation and various nephropathies.
