Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and activates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is critical for the development and function of male reproductive organs such as the prostate and epididymis, and also plays roles in nonreproductive tissues including muscle, hair follicles, and brain.
Abnormalities in AR signaling are linked to diseases such as prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations in the AR gene can cause complete androgen insensitivity syndrome (CAIS).
