Target Information

ATG4C is involved in autophagy, the process by which endogenous proteins and damaged organelles are degraded intracellularly.
Autophagy is essential for cell homeostasis, differentiation, metamorphosis, non-apoptotic cell death, and aging.
Reduced autophagy levels have been observed in some malignant tumors, suggesting a role in regulating uncontrolled cell growth linked to cancer.

This gene encodes a member of the autophagin protein family, also designated as part of the C-54 family of cysteine proteases.
Alternate transcriptional splice variants encoding the same protein have been characterized.
ATG4C cleaves the C-terminal part of MAP1LC3, GABARAPL2, or GABARAP, liberating form I, which can be converted to form II.
Form II, with a revealed C-terminal glycine, is the PE-conjugated form capable of binding to autophagosomes.
ATG4C is highly expressed in skeletal muscle, heart, liver, and testis.
