Target Information
This gene encodes a cysteine protease that specifically hydrolyzes asparaginyl bonds. It may play a role in processing bacterial peptides and endogenous proteins for MHC class II presentation in lysosomal/endosomal systems. Activation occurs under acidic pH and is autocatalytic. Expression increases when monocytes differentiate into dendritic cells, and a fully active enzyme is produced after lipopolysaccharide stimulation. Overexpression is associated with many solid tumor types. A pseudogene exists on chromosome 13, and multiple alternatively spliced variants have been reported, with two validated forms.
