Target Information

Cyclin E belongs to the highly conserved cyclin family, characterized by periodic changes in protein abundance during the cell cycle. Cyclins regulate CDK kinases, and different cyclins exhibit distinct expression and degradation patterns to coordinate mitotic events.
Cyclin E forms a complex with CDK2, acting as a regulatory subunit required for cell cycle G1/S transition. It accumulates at the G1-S boundary and degrades as cells progress through S phase.
Overexpression of Cyclin E has been observed in various tumors, contributing to chromosome instability and tumorigenesis. This protein associates with NPAT, involved in histone gene expression and cell-cycle progression in the absence of pRB.
Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described, with two additional variants reported but not fully sequenced.
