Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit. Coagulation factor XIII is the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer composed of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic function, while the B subunits act as plasma carriers. Platelet factor XIII consists only of two A subunits identical to those in plasma. Upon thrombin cleavage and in the presence of calcium ions, plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits and yields the active enzyme factor XIIIa, which functions as a transglutaminase, stabilizing fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules and other proteins such as α2-plasmin inhibitor and fibronectin. Deficiency in factor XIII can cause bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, and habitual abortion.
