Target Information
This gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII is a heterotetramer of two A subunits and two B subunits. The A subunits have catalytic activity, while the B subunits act as carrier molecules. Platelet factor XIII contains only two A subunits, identical to plasma A subunits. Upon thrombin cleavage and in the presence of calcium, plasma factor XIII dissociates its B subunits to yield the active enzyme factor XIIIa, a transglutaminase that crosslinks fibrin molecules to stabilize the clot. It also links alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor or fibronectin to fibrin alpha chains. Deficiency in factor XIII can lead to bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, and recurrent miscarriage.
