Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein constitutively expressed on mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils.
It serves as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor and is released into serum as both secreted and enzymatically cleaved GPI-anchored forms.
CD14 binds LPS molecules in a reaction catalyzed by LBP (lipopolysaccharide-binding protein), an acute phase serum protein.
Soluble sCD14 can discriminate structural differences between lipopolysaccharides and plays a role in neutralizing serum lipopolysaccharides via lipoprotein particles.
Additionally, CD14 binds apoptotic cells and influences allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same CD14 isoform.
Diseases associated with CD14 dysfunction include Mycobacterium chelonae infection and Croup.
