Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 (HSV-1&2) are both members of the Herpesviridae family and possess large double-stranded DNA genomes. HSVs are transmitted primarily via sexual contact, direct lesion contact, or perinatally. Most infections are asymptomatic, but lesions can appear on skin and mucous membranes of the mouth and genitals.
Primary HSV-1 infection may cause gingivostomatitis, eczema herpeticum, keratoconjunctivitis, and encephalitis. Secondary infections typically result in skin lesions near the nose, mouth, and genital regions.
