Target Information

Secretory carrier membrane proteins (SCAMPs) are components of post-Golgi membranes involved in membrane trafficking.
In fibroblasts, SCAMPs are concentrated in compartments related to receptor recycling and endocytosis.
In neurons, SCAMPs associate with synaptic vesicles, secretion granules, and transporter vesicles.
SCAMPs contain four transmembrane regions and a cytoplasmic tail.
Among five known SCAMPs, SCAMPs 1–3 have N-terminal NPF repeats interacting with EH domain proteins for vesicle budding.
SCAMPs 4 and 5 lack these repeats. SCAMPs 1–4 are ubiquitously expressed, while SCAMP 5 is brain-specific and expressed late in development, coinciding with mature synapse formation.
