HAAO (3-Hydroxyanthranilate 3,4-dioxygenase)는 non-heme ferrous iron을 포함한 intracellular dioxygenase 계열의 단백질로, 간과 신장 등 말초 기관에 널리 분포하며 중추신경계에는 적은 양으로 존재합니다.
이 효소는 트립토판 대사 과정에 관여하며, 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid로부터 quinolinic acid (QUIN)을 합성합니다. QUIN은 NMDA 수용체를 활성화시켜 흥분성 독성을 유발할 수 있으며, 신경학적 및 염증성 질환의 병태생리에 관여할 가능성이 있습니다.
또한 HAAO는 난소암 검출을 위한 바이오마커 후보로 제시되었습니다.
