Target Information
Two distinct signaling pathways activate the host innate immunity against viral infection. One pathway relies on members of the Toll-like receptor (TLR) family, while the other uses the RNA helicase RIG-I as a receptor for intracellular viral double-stranded RNA. MAVS is a mitochondrial membrane protein critical in IFN-β signaling, recruiting IRF-3 to RIG-I and activating NF-κB. MAVS interacts with innate immune components such as TRIF, TRAF2, and TRAF6, and with kinases IKK-α, IKK-β, and IKK-ι through its C-terminal region. Cleavage of this region by Hepatitis C virus protease allows viral immune evasion. Multiple MAVS isoforms exist.
