Target Information
Neurotrypsin is a central nervous system–expressed serine protease whose truncation or absence causes nonsyndromic mental retardation. It is prominently expressed in brain regions involved in learning and memory, such as the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and amygdala. Neurotrypsin contributes to axonal outgrowth, neuronal plasticity, and the organization of the perineuronal environment, often in coordination with other proteases like tissue plasminogen activator. Multiple isoforms of neurotrypsin are known.
