Target Information
Influenza viruses consist of three types (A, B, and C), belonging to the Orthomyxoviridae family. These viruses affect birds and mammals and are roughly spherical with an envelope containing two main glycoproteins (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase). The viral genome comprises seven to eight segments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually.
Two non-structural proteins, NS1 and NS2, are translated from one RNA segment using different reading frames. Influenza A virus NS2 is located in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and is essential for nuclear export of viral ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes.
