Target Information
Lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a plasma enzyme responsible for forming most HDL cholesteryl esters in human plasma. In species with cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), it also contributes to VLDL and LDL cholesteryl ester formation.
Through cholesterol esterification, LCAT facilitates reverse cholesterol transport by moving cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver for excretion.
LCAT deficiency leads to low plasma HDL, while overexpression increases plasma HDL levels.
