Anti-Hu antibodies were originally isolated from a patient with paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis, a rare neurological condition associated with small cell lung carcinoma.
These antibodies specifically bind to neuronal antigens and serve as markers for neuronal cells in tissue.
The Hu antigen is an RNA-binding protein belonging to the embryonic lethal abnormal visual (Elav) family.
