Target Information
Mitochondrial uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are members of the mitochondrial anion carrier protein family. They separate oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis, dissipating energy as heat (mitochondrial proton leak). UCPs facilitate the transfer of anions from the inner to the outer mitochondrial membrane and the return of protons inward, reducing mitochondrial membrane potential. Tissue-specific expression varies among UCPs, and the precise mechanism of proton transfer remains unclear. UCP1 is expressed exclusively in brown adipose tissue, specialized for heat production.
