APOBEC3G는 세포 내에서 HIV-1과 같은 레트로바이러스 감염에 대한 방어에 중요한 역할을 하며, 바이러스 DNA에 하이퍼뮤테이션을 유도하여 게놈 불안정을 초래합니다.
HIV-1 Vif 단백질은 APOBEC3G의 유비퀴틴화 및 분해를 유도하여 이 방어 메커니즘을 억제하지만, D128K 아미노산 치환은 APOBEC3G의 억제 기능을 유지하면서 분해를 방지합니다.
