Type I collagen is a fibrillar collagen found in most connective tissues and is the only collagen component found in cartilage.
Mutations in the COL4A6 gene are associated with osteogenesis imperfecta, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, and idiopathic osteoporosis.
Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 17 and 22, involving this gene and the gene for platelet-derived growth factor beta, are linked to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans due to unregulated growth factor expression.
Two transcripts have been identified for this gene, resulting from alternate polyadenylation signals.
