Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is the pro-alpha1 chain of type I collagen, forming a triple helix with two alpha1 chains and one alpha2 chain. Type I collagen is a fibril-forming collagen found in connective tissues such as bone, cornea, dermis, and tendon.
Mutations in COL1A1 are associated with:
- Osteogenesis imperfecta types I–IV
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIIA and Classical type
- Caffey Disease
- Idiopathic osteoporosis
Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 17 and 22 involving COL1A1 and PDGFB are linked to dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, causing unregulated growth factor expression. Two transcripts have been identified from alternate polyadenylation signals.
