Target Information
Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes (SMC) family proteins play critical roles in nuclear events requiring structural changes of chromosomes, such as mitotic chromosome organization, DNA recombination and repair, and global transcriptional repression. These chromo proteins are conserved across eukaryotes and are essential for mitotic chromosome dynamics. SMC1 and SMC3 form a heterodimeric complex required for metaphase progression and sister chromatid cohesion. Mutations in the gene can lead to Cornelia de Lange syndrome 2.
