Target Information
The Na⁺/H⁺ antiporter (Nhe-1) is a membrane-bound enzyme involved in pH regulation of vertebrate cells. It is inhibited by amiloride and activated by growth factors, mitogens, neurotransmitters, and tumor promoters. Nhe-1 anchors actin filaments to maintain cortical cytoskeleton integrity through interaction with ERM proteins (ezrin, radixin, moesin). It plays a structural role independent of ion exchange and may be associated with hypertension. At least two isoforms of Nhe-1 are known.
