Target Information

Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis by activating a tyrosine kinase signaling cascade upon binding to the proto-oncogenic c-Met receptor. It is secreted by mesenchymal cells and functions as a multifunctional cytokine primarily on epithelial cells. HGF promotes mitogenesis, cell motility, and matrix invasion, playing key roles in angiogenesis, tumorigenesis, and tissue regeneration.

HGF is secreted as a single inactive polypeptide and cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, forming an active heterodimer via a disulfide bond. The protein belongs to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases but lacks protease activity. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
