Target Information
The protein encoded by the KIRREL3 gene belongs to the nephrin-like protein family. These proteins are expressed in the fetal and adult brain, as well as in podocytes of kidney glomeruli. The cytoplasmic domains interact with the C-terminus of podocin, contributing to size- and charge-selective ultrafiltration.
KIRREL3 functions as a synaptic cell adhesion molecule containing multiple extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains and a cytoplasmic PDZ domain-binding motif. Mutations in this gene are associated with several neurological and cognitive disorders. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
