Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. These proteins are growth and differentiation factors initially identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis. BMP4 plays a key role in endochondral bone formation in humans. Reduced expression is associated with bone-related disorders such as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region results in three variants encoding the same protein.
