Slc30A8는 세포 내 소포에 아연을 축적하는 아연 유출 수송체로, 췌장에서 특히 랑게르한스섬에 높은 수준으로 발현됩니다. 인슐린 분비 세포(INS-1)에서 인슐린과 공동 국소화되어 있으며, Type 2 당뇨병의 주요 유전적 위험 인자로 알려진 변이형이 보고되었습니다. Type 1 당뇨병과의 연관성은 발견되지 않았습니다. 또한 Slc30A8의 β세포 발현은 IFN-γ 및 IL-1β와 같은 사이토카인에 의해 조절되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
