Target Information

This gene encodes a transmembrane protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It is involved in the degradation of misfolded proteins in the ER and may play a role in inflammation control. The protein participates in transferring misfolded proteins from the ER to the cytosol for proteasomal degradation in a ubiquitin-dependent manner. It is a selenoprotein containing the rare amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), encoded by the UGA codon, which usually signals translation termination. The 3′ UTRs of selenoprotein mRNAs contain a conserved stem-loop structure called the SECIS element, enabling recognition of UGA as a Sec codon rather than a stop signal.
