Target Information
The SHANK2 gene encodes a member of the Shank family of synaptic proteins, which act as molecular scaffolds in the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses. Shank proteins include multiple protein–protein interaction domains such as ankyrin repeats and SH3 domains. SHANK2 contains a PDZ domain, a cortactin SH3-binding consensus sequence, and a sterile alpha motif. Alternative splicing may regulate the structural diversity and interaction spectrum of Shank proteins in the brain. Mutations or alterations in SHANK2 have been associated with autism spectrum disorder. Multiple transcript variants are produced by alternative splicing.
