Target Information

The ATP1B1 gene encodes a beta 1 subunit of Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase, an integral membrane protein essential for maintaining sodium and potassium ion gradients across the plasma membrane. These gradients are critical for osmoregulation, sodium-coupled transport, and electrical excitability in nerve and muscle cells.
The enzyme consists of two subunits: a large catalytic α subunit and a smaller glycoprotein β subunit. The β subunit regulates the number of sodium pumps transported to the plasma membrane. Multiple genes encode the glycoprotein subunit, and ATP1B1 specifically encodes the β1 isoform. Alternative splicing variants exist, though their biological validity remains uncertain.
