Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells found in keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins can be detected in certain microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 cytokeratins with molecular weights between 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points of 5–8.5, identifiable by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. CKs are divided into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both classes.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
