Target Information
The Prox1 homeobox gene plays a crucial role in embryonic tissue development, including the lens. Prox1 mRNA is expressed in various human tissues, with the highest levels in the lens. Homozygous Prox1-deficient mice exhibit multiple developmental defects and abnormal lens formation due to disrupted cell proliferation, altered expression of Cdkn1b/Cdkn1c, misexpression of E-cadherin, and increased apoptosis. Prox1 is essential for lymphatic system development, hepatocyte migration, and regulation of progenitor cell differentiation in the embryonic retina.
