Target Information

Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase that functions autonomously after Ca(2+)/calmodulin binding and autophosphorylation. It is involved in dendritic spine and synapse formation, neuronal plasticity, and regulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) transport in skeletal muscle. In neurons, it plays a structural role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization by binding and bundling actin filaments independently of kinase activity. This function supports correct targeting of CaMK2A, promoting dendritic spine and synapse formation and maintaining synaptic plasticity essential for long-term potentiation (LTP) and hippocampus-dependent learning. In developing neurons, it promotes dendritic arborization, and in mature neurons, it supports dendritic remodeling. Additionally, it modulates skeletal muscle function in response to exercise through regulation of Ca(2+) transport and phosphorylation of key SR-associated proteins.
