Product Specific Information

This ICACLS monoclonal antibody reacts with human, mouse, and rat glucagon.
Glucagon is a peptide hormone secreted by pancreatic alpha cells within the islets of Langerhans. It functions as an antagonist to insulin, maintaining blood glucose homeostasis. Glucagon promotes glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver. Its secretion is stimulated by hypoglycemia, epinephrine, acetylcholine, and cholecystokinin, and inhibited by insulin and somatostatin. Elevated glucagon levels are observed in pancreatic tumors.

  • Immunohistochemical staining (IHC)
  • IHC of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections

Applications Tested:

  • Tested on FFPE human tissue using low pH antigen retrieval
  • Recommended concentration ≤10 µg/mL (optimize as needed)

Target Information

Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas.
A related hormone, enteroglucagon (oxyntomodulin), includes the glucagon sequence extended by 8 residues at the C-terminus.
Biological activities include glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis—antagonistic to insulin action, leading to increased blood glucose levels.
Glucagon is localized in pancreatic alpha cells, which make up 15–20% of islet cells, primarily at the islet periphery.
Pathological glucagon overexpression is mainly associated with glucagonomas.
Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful for cell and tumor marker studies via immunohistochemistry and for hormone quantification.
