Target Information
The FXIIIA gene encodes the coagulation factor XIII A subunit, which is the final zymogen activated in the blood coagulation cascade. Plasma factor XIII consists of two A subunits (catalytic) and two B subunits (carrier). Upon activation by thrombin and calcium, the A subunits form the active enzyme factor XIIIa, functioning as a transglutaminase that stabilizes fibrin clots by crosslinking fibrin molecules and other proteins such as alpha-2-plasmin inhibitor and fibronectin.
Deficiency in factor XIII can lead to bleeding disorders, impaired wound healing, and habitual abortion. It is categorized into type I (lack of both A and B subunits) and type II (lack of A subunit only).
