Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, which in prokaryotes is thought to organize the 3′ domain of the 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes are found on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
