Target Information
CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, brain white matter, and certain epithelial cells. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and its expression may be upregulated in certain carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.
CD44 is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia of cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells exhibit high CD44 expression, while peripheral B and T cells upregulate CD44 upon stimulation.
The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing diverse isoforms with distinct functions. Diseases associated with CD44 dysfunction include superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus, and CD44 may be implicated in tumor metastasis formation.
