Target Information
Integrins are heterodimers composed of alpha and beta subunits that form noncovalently associated transmembrane glycoprotein receptors. Different alpha-beta combinations determine ligand-binding specificity. Integrins mediate cell–matrix and cell–cell adhesion and transduce signals regulating gene expression and cell growth.
The integrin beta 4 subunit acts as a receptor for laminins, commonly associating with the alpha 6 subunit. It plays a crucial role in invasive carcinoma biology. Mutations in this gene are linked to epidermolysis bullosa with pyloric atresia. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
