Target Information
Ubiquitin-like protein ISG15 plays a key role in the innate immune response to viral infection through conjugation to target proteins (ISGylation) or as a free protein. It is secreted from monocytes in response to type I interferons and promotes natural killer (NK) cell proliferation and non-MHC-restricted cytotoxicity. Expression is induced by IFN-α, IFN-β, IFN-ω, and interferon regulatory factors, as well as influenza B virus. ISG15 acts as a cytokine-like molecule enhancing immune responses and functions intracellularly as a ubiquitin homolog. Mutations in the ISG15 gene can lead to Immunodeficiency 38 with basal ganglia calcification (IMD38).
