Target Information
Akirin1 and Akirin2 are highly conserved, nuclear-localized proteins that regulate transcription of NF-kappa-B-dependent genes. They are essential for defense against Gram-negative bacteria through immune deficiency and NF-kappa-B pathways.
Akirin1 is dispensable in mice, while Akirin2 is required for development and functions downstream of toll-like receptor (TLR), TNF-α, and IL-1β signaling, contributing to IL-6 production.
In Drosophila, Akirin2 is functionally similar to the single Akirin gene, with mutants showing mid-to-early embryonic lethality.
