Target Information
The protein encoded by the ABCC5 (MRP5) gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins facilitate the transport of various molecules across cellular membranes and are categorized into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This protein is part of the MRP subfamily, associated with multidrug resistance. It functions in the cellular export of cyclic nucleotides, contributing to their degradation and elimination. Studies indicate that ABCC5 confers resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs (6-mercaptopurine, thioguanine) and the anti-HIV drug 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine. It may play a role in resistance mechanisms in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and HIV-infected patients. Alternative splicing has been observed, but complete sequence details remain unclear.
