Target Information

NMDAR2B is a member of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) class of ionotropic glutamate receptors. NMDA receptors (NMDAR) are involved in long-term potentiation, an activity-dependent increase in synaptic transmission efficiency thought to underlie memory and learning. NMDAR plays a role in neuronal development and has been implicated in disorders of the central nervous system including Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and ischemic neuronal cell death. Overexpression of the NR2B subunit has been linked to enhanced learning and memory, while aged, memory-impaired animals show reduced NR2B expression. Phosphorylation at Tyr1472 may increase synaptic NMDAR expression, contributing to synaptic plasticity. NMDR2B forms a heterotrimer with NR1, NR2, and NR3 subunits. Dysfunction of NMDAR2B is associated with epileptic encephalopathy and autosomal dominant 6-related mental retardation.
