Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen and organic hydroperoxides using glutathione.
There are several isoforms differing in structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Cytosolic/mitochondrial, selenium-dependent.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma form, mainly produced by kidney and released into circulation.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Reduces a variety of hydroperoxides including those in membranes and lipoproteins.
All mammalian GPx family members, except Cys-containing GPx3 and GPx5, contain selenocysteine at the active site.
