Target Information
Polyamines are ubiquitous polycationic alkylamines, including spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and agmatine. These molecules participate in various cellular functions such as:
- Cell cycle modulation
- Scavenging reactive oxygen species
- Control of gene expression
They also play roles in neurotransmission by regulating cell-surface receptor activity, participating in intracellular signaling pathways, and potentially acting as neurotransmitters.
This gene encodes an FAD-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoenzymes have been identified, some lacking significant oxidase activity on natural polyamine substrates.
