Target Information
Polyamines are ubiquitous polycationic alkylamines such as spermine, spermidine, putrescine, and agmatine. These molecules are involved in various cellular processes including cell cycle modulation, scavenging of reactive oxygen species, and regulation of gene expression. They also play important roles in neurotransmission through modulation of receptor activity and intracellular signaling pathways.
The SMOX gene encodes an FAD-containing enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of spermine to spermidine, producing hydrogen peroxide as a byproduct. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoenzymes have been identified, though some lack significant oxidase activity on natural polyamine substrates.
