Target Information

CD44 is a 100 kDa type I transmembrane glycoprotein expressed on human leukocytes, white matter of the brain, and some epithelial cells. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid (HA) and is involved in cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. CD44 plays roles in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, and homing, and its expression is often upregulated in carcinomas, potentially linked to metastatic potential.

CD44 is expressed by hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, epithelial tissues, and filopodia in cultured keratinocytes. Bone marrow myeloid cells and memory T cells express CD44 at high levels, and peripheral B and T cells can upregulate CD44 upon stimulation. The CD44 gene undergoes complex alternative splicing, producing multiple isoforms with distinct functions. Dysregulation of CD44 has been associated with diseases such as superficial keratitis and lichen sclerosus and may contribute to tumor metastasis formation.
