Target Information
Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They possess intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus and less dynamic minus ends. Microtubules are essential for mitosis, meiosis, maintenance of cell shape, intracellular transport, and cell motility via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, minus ends are anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs).
GTP is required for tubulin heterodimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule polymerization is reversible, exhibiting dynamic instability. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as part of soluble alpha/beta-tubulin dimers or polymerized microtubules. In humans, six genes encode alpha-tubulin isoforms.
