Target Information
Synaptophysin is a calcium-binding integral membrane glycoprotein found in presynaptic vesicles of nearly all neurons. It contains four transmembrane domains and forms complexes with dynamin under high calcium conditions, indicating a role in synaptic vesicle endocytosis. Synaptophysin is involved in regulating short-term and long-term synaptic plasticity and serves as a key marker for nerve terminals and neuroendocrine tumor differentiation. Mutations in the gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation.
